Description
In 2017, the Chinese Government agreed in principle to provide an Rs. 87 million loan for the Riviere des Anguilles Dam Project. This project will involve the construction of a rockfill dam at Riviere des Anguilles with a storage capacity of 14 Mm3 and an annual yield of 50 Mm3. The ultimate objective of the project is make use of the water resources of the Rivière des Anguilles in order to improve and meet the present and future water demands for both potable and irrigation purposes of the southern and southwestern regions of Mauritius (Rose Belle, Mahebourg, Rivière des Anguilles, Souillac, Chemin Grenier, Bel Ombre, Le Morne up to Tamarin). At present, there is no major impounding reservoir to service the southern region as the water supply system in this part of the island depends mainly on groundwater abstraction and offtake from rivers. The implementation status of the project is unknown.
