Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government agreed to provide a grant to the Government of Eritrea for Phase 2 of China-Eritrea Solar Street Light Project. The monetary value of this grant commitment is unknown. This project involved the installation of 400 solar street lights along the road leading to the airport and in densely populated areas, covering a total distance of 13 kilometers. Phase 2 of the project include the installation of 300 out of the 400 street lights, covering a distance of 9 kilometers. China Railway 25th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. was the contractor responsible for implementation. The project commenced in 2017 and ended in December 2017. On December 28, 2016, Liang Hao, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Eritrea, and Romodan Osman, Governor of Central Province of Eritrea, signed the agreement to assist Eritrea for the solar street light (Phase II) project in Asmara (This date has been used to estimate the implementation date). However, the project was not officially handed over to the Eritrean authorities until January 30, 2020. Chinese Ambassador to Eritrea, Yang Zigang, and Ramadan Osman Awliyai, Governor of the Central Province of Eritrea, signed the project handover certificate. The Chinese Government also funded Phase 1 of this project (captured in Record ID#56303).
