Description
In 2003, the Chinese Government committed to provide a grant to the Government of Rwanda (through an exchange of notes) to renovate Amahoro National Stadium. The stadium is located in eastern Kigali in Gasabo district near the capital’s international airport. This project involved renovation of the sports facilities, lighting, sound system, and sanitation systems. It also involved the installation of 4,950 seats in the VIP area, the installation of an electronic scoreboard, and the addition of a basketball and volleyball court. Project implementation began on December 20, 2004. It was completed on November 19, 2005. The project was implemented by China Beijing International Economic Cooperation Corporation.
Additional details
The Chinese name of this project is 卢旺达国家体育场维修工程 or 卢旺达和平体育场. The original construction of the Amahoro stadium was funded by the Chinese and Government and implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. The project was initiated in 1984 and completed in 1988. It cost $42 million to build.
