Description
China's Henan Province has been sending medical teams to Zambia since 1978. The 20th medical team performed its term of service between May 28, 2018 and April 24, 2019, with an intended departure in May 2019. According to the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, the 20th medical team included members who were stationed at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, University of Zambia Teaching Hospital (also known as University Teaching Hospital), Ndola General Hospital (also known as Ndola Teaching Hospital), and Livingstone Central Hospital. The team reportedly visited the Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station Project and CNBM Zambia Industrial Park on July 1st and 10th, 2018, respectively. According to Xinhua News, "during its tour of duty, the 20th Medical team, which arrived in Zambia in May 2018, treated more than 40,000 patients and conducted over 20 free clinics and visits to local communities, which resulted in the treatment of another 1,500 local people."
Additional details
In 2009, the Chinese Government provided a grant for the construction of the Levy Mwanawasa Hospital (see Project ID#32627). The 20th Chinese medical team was the fifth Chinese medical team to have members stationed at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital. The Chinese medical teams which have been dispatched to Zambia since 1978 should not be confused with Chinese military medical teams, which have also been dispatched to Zambia. Chinese military medical teams have been dispatched by the People's Liberation Army and not by Henan Province.
