Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On June 4, 2018, the Chinese Government and the Government of Mozambique signed an exchange of notes for an USD $1.8 million grant agreement for Phase 2 of the Zimpeto National Stadium Technical Cooperation Project. The grant for Phase 1 of the project is captured in the linked Record ID#72896. The purpose of this project was to maintain and rehabilitate Zimpeto National Stadium, which was constructed between 2008 and 2011 with an RMB 500 million interest-free loan from the Chinese Government (recorded in the linked Record ID#1206). As of May 2020, the rehabilitation of the stadium was said to have reached the implementation stage. However, it should be noted that in 2019 the Technical Assistance Agreement with China was renewed, an understanding that does not provides major rehabilitation works, but technical maintenance of the stadium. On September 17, 2021, the Zimpeto Stadium will be closed for rehabilitation works, which include the laying of new turf. These works will last at least four months. It is unclear if this rehabilitation is part of the Chinese grant for the rehabilitation of the stadium as recorded in this project.
