Project narrative

In 2015, the governments of the People's Republic of China and Republic of Malawi discussed a USD 152 million loan for the 138km Mangochi-Makanjira Road (S256) Construction Project. As of 2017, this project was deemed to be under feasibility and design study. As of March 29, 2018, negotiations were still underway with the Chinese Government for a concessional loan to cover the project cost. According to a report on October 21, 2020, the Chinese Government has approved the Mangochi-Makanjira Road Project for immediate implementation in Malawi. However, it is unclear whether China is funding this project. On May 21, 2021, a Malawi MP urged the President to prioritize the Mangochi-Makanjira Road Construction Project, indicating that there are no significant progress so far. The project completion date is estimated to be between 2022 and 2027.
