Description
In October 2016, China Eximbank agreed in principle to finance the construction of the Salkadamna coal-fired power plant in Niger's Tahoua province. The total cost of the project is estimated at $910 million, but it is unclear how much debt financing China Eximbank will ultimately commit. The project’s profitability was informed by a 2003 resource exploration study conducted by China Geo-Engineering Corporation (see ProjectID#58539). A California firm began implementation of the project, with a groundbreaking ceremony taking place 25 June, 2014; however, it later backed out of the project, which created an opportunity for Chinese involvement. At first, the plant will have a 200 MW capacity (4 steam turbines, 50 MW each), but this will reportedly increase to over 500 MW. The coal produced by the mine will help reduce Niger's consumption of firewood. TBEA Co. appears to be the Chinese contractor that the Government of Niger will soon select to implement this project.
