Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On April 10, 2019, the Chinese Government and the Government of South Sudan signed an RMB 300 million grant agreement for the Jur River Bridge Construction Project. The grant proceeds were drawn from an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ECTA) that was previously signed by the parties. A project implementation agreement was then signed on August 28, 2019 and a supplementary project implementation agreement was signed on September 24, 2020. The purpose of the project is to construct a 1,480 meter bridge over the Jur River that is located in Wau City, the second largest city in South Sudan. Upon completion, the bridge will connect Juba to the Bahr El Ghazal region and its northern neighbor Sudan. The new bridge is located 200 meters north of the old Jur River bridge, which developed technical problems. Tianyuan Construction Group Co., Ltd. is the contractor responsible for project implementation. CCCC Highway Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd. and Beijing CCCC Highway and Bridge Engineering Supervision Co., Ltd. are the contractors responsible for project design and supervision. Construction began on January 31, 2021, and a formal groundbreaking ceremony took place on or around April 19, 2021. It was originally expected that the bridge would be put into use on July 30, 2023.
