Project narrative

During the the Tianjin World Economic Forum in 2014, Malian and Chinese representatives signed a commercial contract for the financing and construction of a 40 MW solar power plant in Kati. Reports of the value of the project range from CFAF 25 billion to CFAF 82 billion, but regardless, this financing does not appear to have been confirmed. In November 2017, during the 2nd session of the Joint Commission for Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation between the Republic of Mali and the People's Republic of China, a working session was held to secure Chinese financing for the Kati solar power plant (projet de centrale solaire de Kati). EXIM Bank has reportedly received certain documents from Mali and is in the process of evaluating the project. In 2019, a 42 kWp solar power plant in the Kati Circle was opened by German start-up Africa Green Tec in partnership with the Malian Agency for the Development of Rural Electrification (Amader). The project had an investment of 300 million CFA francs, financed by the German government and private investors. It is unclear if Chinese financing was finally committed to the project.
