Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In December 2014, the Office of Chinese Language Council International Headquarters (Hanban) approved the construction of a new Confucius Institute building at Cairo University on the university's campus in the city of Cairo. This followed the establishment of the institute several years prior (see ID#546). On March 26, 2016, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong laid the foundation stone of the new building during an official groundbreaking ceremony. Then, on February 2, 2018, the President of Cairo University gave a tour of the building. On April 21, 2018, the Chinese Ambassador to Egypt, Song Aiguo, and the President of Cairo University cut a ribbon to the building during an official project completion ceremony. The building has 6 floors, 5 above ground and 1 underground, and is equipped with classrooms, language labs, and libraries. There are also cafes on the top floor.
