On August 23, 2012, the Chinese Embassy in Mali held a farewell ceremony for 29 Malian students who received scholarships to study in China. It is unclear for how long the Malian students were set to study in China, and the total cost of the scholarships is unknown. As of 2012, the Chinese government provided nearly 700 scholarships to Mali through various programs
