Project narrative

On September 18, 2007, the Chinese Government agreed to provide a $1,326,084 grant to the Government of Uganda for the emergency construction and rehabilitation of two primary schools. The grant provided for the study, the geological survey and the design of the project, as well as the provision of construction machinery, equipment and materials. Construction began on September 7, 2008 and ended on March 21, 2009. The schools were constructed in Rugushuru in Sembabule district and in Nyakinoni sub-county, Kanungu district. The school in Kanungu district is also known was the 'China-Uganda Friendship School' (or 'Nyakinoni China-Uganda Friendship School'). It is located in the Prime Minister's hometown and it has six classroom blocks, two laboratory blocks, a computer room, an administration block, flushing toilets for students and teachers, and a basketball court. China Jiangxi International Economic and Technological Cooperation Company and 23rd Metallurgical Construction Group Co Ltd were the contractors responsible for implementation. As of April 7, 2020, the Aid Management Platform (AMP) of the Government of Uganda's Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development recorded total disbursements through this grant as amounting to $1,463,057.79 (or 110% of the original grant commitment amount).
