Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On December 4, 2015, Chinese and Tanzanian government officials signed an agreement in which China granted $40.61 million USD for construction of a new library and a new Confucius Institute at the University of Dar Es Salaam (Chinese project name: 援坦桑尼亚达累斯萨拉姆大学图书馆和孔子学院项目). China initially established the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar Es Salaam in 2013 (Record ID#31280). This project was initiated on June 2, 2016. An official handover ceremony was held on November 27, 2018. The new 20,000 square meter library accommodates 2,100 students, the Confucius Institute, the China-Tanzania Cultural Center, diesel generators, and other ancillary landscape. It is reportedly the biggest library in East and Central Africa. The library can store 800,000 books. The lecture halls have a capacity of 600 seats. The project was designed by China Zhongyuan International Engineering Co. Ltd. and constructed by Jiangsu Construction Engineering Group Co., Ltd.

Mixed intent since library has development intent and Confucius Institute has representational intent.
