Description
On March 25, 2013, Chinese and Tanzanian government representatives signed an exchange of letters for the Abdullah Mzee Hospital Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project (or 援桑给巴尔阿卜杜拉姆才医院) in Mkoani on Pemba Island in Zanzibar. China Daily reported that the Chinese government granted 100 million RMB ($15 million USD) for this project. The hospital is built on the site of an older one that was also funded by the Chinese government in 1970. The new hospital has 160 beds, compared with 61 at the previous one. Covering 8,000 square meters, the hospital now has an emergency building, office building and a building for patients. China IPPR International was responsible for project design and China Jiangsu Construction Engineering Group was the implementing contractor. Construction started on August 27, 2015. A formal project handover ceremony took place on on October 24, 2016. This hospital was officially inaugurated on November 26, 2016.
