On May 8, 2017, the Chinese government handed over emergency humanitarian food aid worth $5,000,000 to three Northeastern states (Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) in Nigeria through the World Food Programme (WFP). The project aims to provide 4,205 metric tons of rice to 41,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by Boko Haram in this region. The handover ceremony was held in Maiduguri, and was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian, Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, and representative of the World Food Programme, Ron Sibanda.
