In March 2017, several sources reported that the Chinese government had pledged $300 million USD to give to Datang Telecom International Technology, a Chinese state-owned company for a telecommunications project in Tanzania. According to a media report on TanzaniaInvest, the president of Datang, Mr. Yuang Yong issued a statement to lend USD$300 million on March 1st. This loan would help Datang Telecom and Tanzania Telecommunication Company (TTCL) set up a telecommunications equipment manufacturing plant and roll out 4G capabilities in both rural and urban areas in Tanzania.
