Project narrative

On November 2, 2016, China provided 20 million yuan (approx 2.9 million USD) in humanitarian aid to flood-hit North Korea upon request by the DPRK government. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the 20 million yuan aid will be used for emergency response and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. Around 70,000 North Koreans were left homeless after their houses were destroyed by floodwaters in North Hamgyong, a province in northeastern North Korea. Furthermore, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, around 18,600 households were totally destroyed by the flood and over 11,400 homes sustained damage.
