Description

In October 2009, when Premier Wen Jiabao visited North Korea, an agreement was reached in which the Chinese Government committed to donate 30,000 tons of food (captured via Project ID#63004), 50,000 tons of fuel oil (captured via Project ID#63382), and 80,000 tons of high-quality coal (captured via Project ID#63390) to the Government of North Korea. However, according to Chinese Government reporting to the World Food Program’s International Food Aid Information System (INTERFAIS), it ultimately donated 34,527 metric tons of rice (in seven separate deliveries of 2621 tons, 4022 tons, 6191 tons, 3474 tons, 6489 tons, 5311 tons, and 6419 tons), 18,966 metric tons of wheat flour (in six separate deliveries of 1248 tons, 928 tons, 1431 tons, 2942 tons, 1872 tons, 10545 tons), and 60,334 metric tons of maize (in six separate deliveries of 2670 tons, 1492 tons, 1574 tons, 15966 tons, 30884 tons, 7748 tons) to North Korea in 2009. To estimate the monetary value of the rice donation ($21,242,736.75), AidData takes the international price of a ton of rice in January 2009 ($615.25) and multiplies it by 34,527 tons. To estimate the monetary value of the wheat donation ($4,006,946.82), AidData takes the international price of a ton of wheat in January 2009 ($211.27) and multiplies it by 18,966 tons. To estimate the monetary value of the maize donation ($10,455,278.86), AidData takes the international price of a ton of maize in January 2009 ($173.29) and multiplies it by 60,334 tons. The combined monetary value of these food aid donations is $35,704,962.43.
