Project narrative

On October 19, 2015, the Chinese, Australian, and Papua New Guinean governments jointly signed the Trilateral Cooperation Subsidiary Arrangement for the Australia-China-Papua New Guinea Pilot Cooperation on Malaria Control. According to the Lowy Institute Pacific Aid platform, in 2016, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce granted $700,000 for the China-Australia-PNG Malaria Control Trilateral Development Cooperation Pilot Project. In April 2013, the Australian and Chinese governments signed an MOU to conduct trilateral cooperation on the project. The objective of the project is to strengthen PNG's Central Public Health Laboratory and the research capacity of the Institute of Medical Research (IMR). The project's launch ceremony was held on May 26, 2016 and was initially slated to run until 2018. The Australian government contributed AUD 4 million to the project. China's aid includes providing medical experts to the facilities to work at IMR headquarters in Goroka and CPHL at Port Moresby General Hospital. This project is located in Port Moresby and Madang. Reviews of the project recommended that it be extended to June 2019. All three involved countries agreed to the extension.
