Description
On August 11, 2013, Prime Minister Henry Puna met with the Chinese ambassador during the first of a series of bilateral discussions in Wellington. During the meeting, China agreed to the proposed allocation for the remainder of the grant fund, with NZ $1.5 million allocated to the Northern Group Roofing Supplies Project. In 2005, the Cook Islands faced a series of cyclones that caused significant infrastructure damage to a number of Outer Island houses and buildings, including those in the Northern Group. Work was undertaken to put in place water tanks to improve water quality; however, there was an urgent need to replace roofing on buildings to ensure that water was captured and drinkable. According to page 2 of "NORTHERN GROUP WATER HARVESTING PROJECT," and page 3 of "Activity Completion Report: Northern Group Rainwater Harvesting Project," the Northern Group Roofing project was completed in 2011. This NZ $1.5 will be allocated for supplies related to the original project for 2013-2015.
