Project narrative

On April 9, 2010, an agreement to dispatch the fifth medical team to PNG was signed by China's Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Wei Ruixing, and Papua New Guinea ’s Minister of Health, and officially called “The Agreement between the Government of the People ’s Republic of China and the Government of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea on the Dispatch of the Fifth Medical Team." This series of medical missions began after the then Chinese Ambassador to PNG, Zhao Zhenyu, discussed PNG's extreme need for medical doctors in 2000. In November 2010, China dispatched the fifth medical team to Port Moresby General Hospital. According to the 2010 Budget Estimates, the medical team provided 2 million PNK in non-cash assistance to the PNG government. This was China’s 5th Medical Mission to PNG, it was preceded by the 1st Medical Mission in 2002 (#37712), the 2nd Medical Mission in 2004 (#37785), the 3rd Medical Mission in 2006 (#39292), and the 4th Medical Mission in 2008 (#39291), and followed by the 6th Medical Mission in 2013 (#63848), the 7th Medical Mission in 2014 (#63849), the 8th Medical Mission in 2017 (#63850), the 9th Medical Mission in 2018 (#63851), and the 10th Medical Mission in 2019 (#63852).
