Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2006, the Chinese Government reportedly provided a $3.6 million (PGK 10 million) grant to the Government of Papua New Guinea for the Lae Fishery Processing and Cold Storage Plant Construction Project. The grant proceeds were drawn at least in part from an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) signed by the two governments in 2002. The purpose of the project was to construct a fishery processing and cold storage facilitate in the Malahang industrial center within the city of Lae and Morobe Province. Upon completion, the facility was expected to have the capacity to process 50 tons of tuna and blast freeze 15 tons of tuna products per day. Weihai International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. was the contractor responsible for implementation. The project entered implementation on April 2, 2007. It was officially completed and handed over to the local authorities on January 16, 2008. The project employed 22 Chinese workers and 50 PNG workers.
