Project narrative
On April 23, 2015, Chinese and Micronesian government officials signed an exchange of letters confirming a grant worth 14.2 million RMB for phase 10 of technical cooperation for the Pohnpei pilot farm (or Pohnpei Demonstration Farm or 援密第十期佩州示范农场技术合作项目) in Micronesia. The Micronesian legislature approved of this grant agreement on August 17, 2015. According to the Hunan Provincial Government , phase 10 was carried out by experts from Hunan International Engineering Construction Co. Phase 9 (#63906) ended in late November 2015, and there is evidence of phase 10 experts being active in Micronesia in late 2018 , and these phases tend to run on two-year intervals. Therefore, AidData assumes phase 10 took place between 2016 and 2018. The farm is located in the state of Pohnpei spanning 80,000 square meters including 40,000 square meters of tropical rain forests. The farm cultivates crops like sakau, yam, taro, banana, and others. The remaining 40,000 square meters houses laboratories, offices, and greenhouses. The purpose of this bilateral cooperation is to train local Micronesian farmers, introduce new seeds, and transfer agricultural technology to increase productivity. The experts helped build the Agricultural Products Exhibition Center (#64554) in Pohnpei as part of the phase 10 technical cooperation project. It is under the umbrella Record ID#64557 which captures all 11 phases of technical cooperation.
