Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On 27 March 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Micronesian President Christian discussed bilateral cooperation and presumably signed an unspecified agreement in which China pledged to carry out a training course on coconut pest control technologies (or 椰子病虫害防治技术培训班) in Micronesia. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs organized and likely sponsored the group of Chinese experts to travel to Micronesia. The Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Services (CATAS) sent a 12-member team to carry out the nation-wide workshop which took place between 11 June and 5 July, 2018. It was implemented in all four of Micronesia's states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The team conducted a total of 90 courses with over 100 trainees. The training courses focused on knowledge and techniques related to high-yield cultivation, pest and disease control, identifying coconut varieties, and hybrid seed production.
