Description
In 2014, the Chinese Government provided a grant to the Government of Samoa worth 6 million Samoan Tala (ST) for the renovation of the Tanumalala Prison Complex. The grant was specifically for the first phase of the renovation, which was to involve the construction of a fence with security cameras enclosing the property. The full renovation project also included the construction of a 'a multi-purpose dining hall,' a women’s dormitory with a 120-bed capacity, and two male dormitories with 960-bed capacity. However, the Chinese Government funding for the fence was redirected to the construction of the Police Academy (as captured via Project ID#68473). The project was eventually funded through the Unit Trust of Samoa, and opened on June 28, 2019. As of March 26, 2020, the fence remained incomplete.
