Description
According to Pacific Island Times reporting, on January 4, 2018, the Chinese Ambassador officially handed over a Bank of China check worth $200,000 USD from the Municipal Government of Zhongshan City in China's Guangdong Province to the Government of Yap State. It is unclear when this donation was formally committed. The donation was spent on a new volleyball building for the Yap State Multipurpose Gymnasium (or 雅浦州多功能体育馆 or Yap Sports Complex) in preparation for the 2018 Micro Games. The Pacific Islands also reported that after the MicroGames, the prefabricated building will be moved to the campus of Yap High School and installed for multipurpose use such as volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling. The official handover ceremony marking project completion took place on July 17, 2018. The construction start date and implementing contractor are unknown.
Additional details
Language featured in articles from the Chinese Embassy in FSM suggest the entire Yap State Multipurpose Gymnasium was financed by Zhongshan, but since the financial details are only tied to the volleyball courts, AidData will only capture those details for now.
