Full Description

Project narrative

On September 18, 2015, the Chinese Government and the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia signed an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), which committed $10.25 million of grant funding for multiple projects (captured via Record ID#65035). Then, on January 15, 2018 and January 30, 2018, the two governments signed an exchange of letters, which allocated RMB 21,201,800 of the grant proceeds from the September 18, 2015 ETCA for the Kahmar Bridge Reconstruction Project. This project funding was subsequently approved by the FSM Congress on January 22, 2019. The purpose of the project was to reconstruct the Kahmar Bridge in Nett municipality within Pohnpei. The bridge was designed to be 56 meters long with 100 meters of wiring on both sides. The purpose of the bridge is to reduce transportation costs, promote travel for people and goods, and reduce the probability of accidents. China Railway 14th Construction Bureau Group Co., Ltd (CRCC 14) was the contractor responsible for implementation. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 26, 2019 and, at the time, works were planned to end after 10 months. The official handover and ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on August 20, 2020.
