Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

The Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism providing funding for the Chinese Cultural Center in the city of Tel Aviv. Israeli interior design firm A.R.Grinberg Architects LTD assisted the construction of the center, completing its work in 2018. The center, however, officially opened on November 26, 2017. The China Cultural in Tel Aviv describes itself as "the official cultural institute of the Chinese Embassy in Israel." The center was purportedly the second of its kind in the Middle East and the 35th globally. The center sought to spread Chinese culture to Israeli public, to encourage dialogue, and to promote bilateral cooperation. The 1,000 square meter center included a multi-purpose hall, classrooms, a dance and martial arts studio, a library, and an audio-visual area. The center was intended to host events such as art performances, cultural exhibitions, academic seminars, calligraphy lessons, dance workshops, film screening and other activities aimed at introducing Chinese culture to Israel. As of December 2019, the center had hosted over 50,000 visitors.

Staff comments

The Hebrew project title is מרכז תרבות סין - לימוד סינית ופעילויות תרבות. No specific source names the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism as the funder, but the goal of the center, combined with the presence of China's Vice Culture Minister, suggests to AidData that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism was indeed the funding agency; AidData has coded appropriately (see "China cultural center opens in Israel to boost exchange, mutual understanding"). "Year uncertain" box was checked because it is unclear which year the construction of the center was committed in.
