Description
In September 2018, President Patrice Talon visited Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the meeting, both sides pledged to cooperate on a range of issues. At that meeting, the Chinese Government agreed to donate 3700 metric tons (mt) of rice to the Government of Benin through the World Food Programme (WFP). The rice was earmarked for children in over 1750 primary schools in the country. On April 16, 2019, the Chinese Government dispatched an envoy to Benin to supervise the implementation of the rice distribution program. Then, on August 9, 2019, the Chinese Government handed the rice over to the Government of Benin. Chinese Ambassador Peng Jingtao (彭惊涛), Beninese officials, and WFP representatives attended the handover ceremony. The estimated monetary value of the rice donation is $1,534,316.
