Description
In May 2013, a Chinese government official signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) pledging Chinese grant financing for the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Reconstruction Project (or 纳兹莫加医院重症监护病房的改造) in Zanzibar. The value of this project is unknown. This project includes constructing new ICU buildings and facilities at Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital (MMH) and also installing modern equipment. In December 2012, China IPPR International Engineering Corporation signed the deign contract for this project. However, there is no evidence that this project was ever actually carried out. Mnazi Mmoja Hospital (MMH), Zanzibar's main hospital, is a government-run facility located right outside of Stone Town. The hospital contains 400 beds and consists of a variety of specialty departments, including pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, acupuncture, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, trauma and maternity.
