Project narrative

On May 27, 2020, the Chinese province of Shanxi gave a donation of 20,000 surgical masks to the department of Canelones and 10,000 surgical masks to the department of Paysandú to assist Uruguay's dealing with COVID-19. Harvard's Mask Diplomacy Dataset estimated the donation to Canelones to be worth USD 8,000 and the donation to Paysandú to be worth USD 4,000, for a total estimated value of USD 12,000.

1. The Chinese Embassy article that describes this donation includes a photo with several boxes that have Brazilian flags on their labels, in addition to boxes with Uruguayan flags. This issue warrants further investigation.
