In 2012, the Chinese government funded 6 million USD through a grant to support the First Phase of Rumbek Kiir Mayardit Women's Hospital Project (南苏丹拜克基尔•马亚尔迪特妇女医院项目). The purpose of this hospital construction project was to provide medical services to women, particularly those with pregnancy related complications such as fistula. The Rumbek Kiir Mayardit Women’s Hospital is located in the town of Rumbek in Lakes State. The hospital covers an area of 32000 m^2 and has a total construction area of approximately 3,700 m^2. It has a 60 bed capacity, delivery rooms, theatres, a waiting home, laboratories, diagnostic equipment, offices and a mortuary. China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. was the contractor responsible for project implementation. The project was initiated on March 31, 2012 and completed on November 2013. It was officially handed over to South Sudan on December 10, 2013. On July 12, 2014, the official opening ceremony for this hospital was held.
