Project narrative
On 16 February 2016, the People’s Republic of China signed an exchange of letters with the Government of Jamaica for the Confucius Institute Teaching Building Project. The project involved relocating and expanding the previous Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, which was completed in 2009. The new facility cost 5.2 million USD. The project groundbreaking ceremony was held on 17 May 2018. The estimated construction time was 12 months. Project management was undertaken by the consortium of China Qiyuan Engineering Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Xi’an Sifang Construction Supervision Co., Ltd. Qingjian Group Co., Ltd. is the general contractor for the project. The new facility was handed over from the People’s Republic of China to the Government of Jamaica on 14 October 2019. With the construction of the new facility, the Confucius Institute was moved from its previous location on Gibraltar road to the former Personnel Office at UWI Mona Campus. The previous building was 1380 square feet, while the new building is approximately 2500 square feet. The new facility includes eight classrooms, three administrative offices, a library, a lecture theatre, a cultural exhibition area, and a tea room. It is also equipped with the tools to facilitate video conferencing. This project is linked to a Chinese government grant to build a Confucius Institute at UWI Mona (Record ID#43350) because it is replacing that Confucius Institute build in 2009. This project is linked to a 2013 feasibility study to build a Confucius Institute in Jamaica (Record ID#39901) because that study resulted in this new facility.
