Full Description

Project narrative

In 2018, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), in partnership with the Fisheries Department of Guyana's Ministry of Agriculture and Fujian Institute of Oceanography (FJIO), financed the 2018 Overseas Training Course on Aquaculture Technology for Guyana. The training was intended to improve the technological and managerial capabilities of Guyanese aquaculture so as to promote the development of the industry. The training covered topics including the construction of breed ponds, water quality and disease prevention and control. The training was implemented by FJIO. FJIO sent an assessment team in April 2018 for a pre-stage field investigation for the implementation of the program. The program's 57 trainees were drawn from Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, and Nine and included the Fisheries Department of Guyana's Ministry of Agriculture, fish farmers, teachers, students from the University of Guyana (the Turkeyen and Tain campuses) and the Guyana School of Agriculture, and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers. The training was held at the Regency Suite Hotel in Georgetown. The training included sessions at the Satyadeow Sawh Aquaculture Station and a field trip to a shrimp farm in Region Six. The 10-day long training began on November 28, 2018. The training was scheduled on December 11, 2018. However, the course ended on December 10, 2018, following visits by the participants to the Sweet Water Aqua Farm at Canal #2, West Bank Demerara and the Satyadeow Sawh Aquaculture Station at Mon Repos. MOFCOM had previously financed the 2017 Overseas Training Course on Aquaculture Technology for Guyana in September 2017, as captured by linked Record ID#.
