On December 18, 2007, Sri Lanka’s Road Development Authority (RDA) signed two contracts with Shanxi Construction Engineering (Group) Corporation (CSCE): one contract worth RMB 45 million for improvement of 2.3 km from Kiribathgoda to Kadawatha of Colombo-Kandy road and for and another contract worth RMB 3 million for the signalization of Welikada Intersection. Both of these contracts were supported by grant assistance from the Chinese Government. Third Railway Survey and Design Institute of China (renamed as China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC) ) was responsible for the design of the road. CSCE was responsible for construction of the road. Through this project, a 2.3 km road segment from Gala Junction Bridge at Kiribathgoda to Kadawatha of Colombo Kandy Road (A001) was widened to four lanes with a 1.2 m centre median, a 1.4 m hard shoulder and a 1.6 m soft shoulder both sides. The project was completed on July 12, 2011.
