On December 4, 2018, the Chinese Government provided Sri Lanka with 90 water bowser trucks (water tankers) to help the Sri Lankan government improve the living conditions of people affected by a severe drought in early 2017. At the request of Sri Lanka, China pledged to provide water tankers and related supporting technical services. China will provide technical service training and free maintenance services for the vehicles for one year. Suzhou Hengrun Import and Export Co., Ltd. was the Chinese implementation company for the project. The handover ceremony was held on December 19, 2018, in the Presidential Palace of Sri Lanka. Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan and Sri Lankan President Sirisena signed the handover certificate. More than 30 people including senior officials of the Presidential Palace of Sri Lanka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation Water Resources and Disaster Management Kumara, and representatives of Suzhou Hengrun Import and Export Co., Ltd. attended the ceremony.
