Description

In 2009, the Chinese Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) sent its first assessment team to Sudan for the purpose of investigationg the first Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital Reconstruction and Expansion Project. The Chinese Embassy in Sudan granted $35,350 USD for this project. In May 2010, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) granted $600,000 USD to CFPA for the construction of Abu Ushar Hospital (see Project #53415). The final cost of the project overran this fund, ending with a total cost of $1.105 million USD (RMB 6.93 million). CFPA took on 73 percent of the $505,000 in cost overruns equal to $368,650 USD (see Project #71822); Sudanese Al-Birr and Tawasul Charity Organization (BTO) took 20 percent equal to $101,000 USD; and the remaining $35,350 USD was covered by the Chinese Embassy in Sudan. Chinese Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) was the implementing contractor. Construction began in June 2010. The increased costs and other difficulties led to the project being completed three months behind schedule. According to the Asian Development source, construction was completed in May 2011 and the hospital was inaugurated on 16 July 2011. The hospital was originally a horse farm built during the British colonial period in 1929. In 1974, Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital became the headquarters for the Chinese medical mission. The hospital receives 5,000 cases monthly. China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) carried out a maternal and infant healthcare network project at this facility (see Project ID#30435). Abu Ushar Hospital was renovated again in 2016 (see Project ID#53314).
