Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In April 2016, China Road & Bridge Corporation, one of the primary contractors for the flagship Single Gauge Railway (SGR) project in Kenya, announced that it would grant $9.8 million (Ksh 1 billion) to Nairobi's Railway Training Institute (RTI). The grant comes alongside Ksh 1 billion in funding from the Kenyan government to up the skills of railway engineers ahead of commissioning the standard gauge railway. The funds will be used to establish an engineering school at RTI specializing in standard gauge railway operations. Construction was expected to be complete 24 to 36 months after the grant was given. Kenya's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has already given CRBC a 10-year concession to operate the SGR line once complete as part of the loan agreements by the Chinese government.
