Project narrative

In 2012, state-owned China Wu Yi Co., Ltd. funded RMB 9.5 million ($1.4 million) to dig 17 water storage ponds along the Turbi-Moyale road in order to meet the need for water by 100,000 residents and 500,000 animals. The firm, which was working on the Turbi-Moyale road at the time with funding from the African Development Bank and the Kenyan government, at first built ponds to create water supply for their construction. After discovering locals used the ponds for their own needs and receiving gifts from residents, Yang Dong, the project manager, decided to permanently fund the creation of the 17 ponds. The project was completed by 2016.
