Project narrative

On September 27, 2004, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in which CNPC agreed to provide $1.35 million USD to the ministry for the creation of the "Presidential Scholarship." The scholarship was to finance higher level education in China for excellent Kazakhstani students. The scholarship fund was active as of September 2011.

Staff comments

1. "Project status" was coded as "Completion" because CNPC stated in 2008 that it had "provided" the $1.35 million USD, implying that all Chinese funds had been disbursed (see pg.4 of "CNPC in Kazakhstan Sustainability Report 2008").
