Project narrative
According to Government of Sudan’s Ministry of Finance, in 2003, China Eximbank provided a $110,662,159.90 USD loan to the Government of Sudan for the Kehaila East Agriculture Scheme and El Makabra (المكابراب) Agriculture Scheme (Merowe Resettlement) Project. The borrowing terms of this loan are unknown. China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE) reported that contract for the El Makabra Agriculture Scheme cost $35 million. The construction of the China Eximbank-financed 1250 MW Merowe Hydroelectric Power Plant (see Record ID#178) caused the displacement of several groups of people living in the surrounding areas, one of which was the Manaseer (Manasir) people. The purpose of the project was to provide reliable water access for the Manaseer (Manasir) in Merowe Dam resettlement areas. It involved the construction of irrigation canals, pumping stations, and power stations. On May 25, 2004, China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE) signed the $35 million USD commercial contract for the El Makabra Agriculture Scheme. It was successfully completed, but its precise completion date is unknown. In 2003, the Chinese Government also financed the New Amri Agriculture Scheme (Merowe Resettlement) Project (see #56927) and the Kehaila East Agriculture Scheme (see #56959).
