Project narrative

In 2015, the Chinese Government reportedly provided a grant to the Government of Botswana worth P120 million for the Mmopane Primary School Construction Project. This project involves the construction of a primary school in the village of Mmopane (Block 1) within Botswana’s Kweneng District. The school will include an administrative office, 22 classrooms, a library, 3 laboratories, 24 teachers' houses, 6 restroom facilities, a dining hall, 2 security rooms, a water tank, a football pitch, 2 basketball courts, and a bell tower to serve around 880 students. This project was designed and constructed by SIPPR Engineering Group Co., Ltd and Research Institute and Longxin Construction Group Co., Ltd. This elementary school project was first proposed in 2009 under China's "New Eight Initiatives" to aid Africa. On September 10, 2015, the Chinese Government and the Government of Botswana signed a design project design contract. Then, on August 16, 2016, a project implementation agreement was signed. Construction began in June 2018, but an official groundbreaking ceremony did not take place until August 10, 2018. As of March 29, 2019, the school was still under construction with an anticipated completion date of January 2020. On January 12, 2020, the primary school was deemed complete and opened its doors to the first students during the academic school year of 2021.
