Description

On July 5, 2019, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Beijing and signed a number of agreements with China. After meeting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, she signed a Letter of Exchange for rice aid which is meant to assist Rohingyas displaced by the crisis in Myanmar. The project's name is "China Emergency Rice Aid Project for Rohingyas". This was one of nine agreements signed between the two countries, including an aid package for the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor. During the same visit, Bangladesh received a US$31 billion funding package for the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar corridor project. Under the agreement, China would send 2554 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh. On November 8, 2019, China shipped 200 tonnes of rice (the first batch) from Shanghai, which arrived at Chittagong Port in Bangladesh in December 2019. In July 2020, over 1300 tons arrived. On January 22, 2021, the Bangladeshi authorities announced all 2554 tons of rice have arrived. The monetary value of this donation is unknown.
