Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On February 13, 2019, the Chinese government announced its intent to provide four full scholarships to students from Brunei for the 2019-20 academic year. The applications were due March 31, 2019, and students began study in China in September. An award ceremony was held on August 20th at the Chinese Embassy in Brunei for the recipients, where the Chinese embassy ended up awarding five recipients instead of four. The recipients of the Chinese Government scholarships were Aziman Harith bin Aliman; Nur Diyana Nasriah binti Suhaili; Rayyana Farzana binti Mohamad Sarif Pudin; Nurazimah binti Mohd Nasir; and Siti Athirah binti Haji Lukman. Two other students were awarded scholarships from Sun Yat-sen University at the ceremony (see Record ID#89134).

Staff comments

1. The Borneo Bulletin article describing the award ceremony (source ID 150891) mentions that five, rather than four students received the Chinese government scholarship for 2019-20. In total, seven students received scholarships at this ceremony, the others receiving the Sun Yat-sen University scholarship. This is consistent with a copy of the Chinese ambassador to Brunei's remarks that mention seven students receiving scholarships (source ID 157586) so it appears that the number of scholarships was changed from when it was first announced to when they were distributed.
