Loan description

Chinese Government provides food aid to North Korea at the beginning of 2020

Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

According to a report from Radio Free Asia, at the beginning of 2020, the Chinese government began sending large amounts of food aid to North Korea by train. The food aid included corn, wheat, and soybean oil, and possibly also rice. The shipments were to last several months, and were estimated to reach a total of hundreds of thousands of tons. In order to accommodate the transportation of the food aid, China planned to halt passage of general commercial cargo to North Korea. The aid was shipped from Dandong Station in China to Sopo Station in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Staff comments

An Asahi Shimbun article mentions that China sent between 500,000 and 600,000 tons of food before June 2020- unconfirmed if this overlaps with the food shipments covered in the RFA article.
