On 2 August 2019, the Consul General of China in Kuching, Malaysia, Cheng Guangzhong, announced the recipients of 16 Chinese-funded scholarships for students from the Malaysian state of Sarawak to attend universities in China. The Consulate announced that the MYR 160,000 scholarships were awarded to 14 Chinese and 2 ethnic Malay students in Sarawak from Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 1. The Consulate emphasized the shared value of education to both the Chinese and Malaysian government, and reaffirmed China's commitment to welcome students with "high-level Chinese". The scholarship was open to applicants in January 2019, and was emphasized to be open to students of all ethnicities. The project is part of the Chinese Consulate in Kuching's greater effort to increase Chinese education throughout Sarawak and promote cultural and economic exchanges between China and Sarawak.
