Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On February 1, 2019, the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine invited 60 orphans to the embassy and gave each of them a red envelope and a quilt. In accordance with Chinese tradition, the red envelope symbolizes good luck and the quilt represents warmth. The children were from the Pecherskyi District of Kiev, where the embassy is located. The district chief and the first deputy chief of the district were present.

Staff comments

It is traditional for red envelopes containing money to be given as gifts during Chinese New Year, so it is assumed that the red envelopes referenced in the Chinese Embassy articles contain cash, although this is not explicitly stated.
