Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On October 18th, 2006, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust of England (SSAT) and Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) signed an agreement to establish a Confucius Institute to promote the teaching of Chinese language and culture in primary and secondary schools in England. This Confucius Institute was the first in the UK to focus specifically on primary and secondary education. The partnering Chinese university is Peking University. The document was signed by Elizabeth Reid, Chief Executive of SSAT, and Zhang Guoyou, Vice-President of Peking University. The institute was formally opened in July 2007 with 5 SSAT Confucius Classrooms. The institute won the "Confucius Institute of the Year Award" for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009. On June 8th, 2012, the Institute of Education at the University College London signed an agreement with the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China to assume control of the SSAT Confucius Institute as the SSAT's contract with the UK government ended in 2011. This project is tracked under ID #44315.
