Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On December 21st, 2016, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) signed an agreement with Lancaster University to provide a grant to construct, renovate, decorate, and install new equipment in the Round House, the dedicated site of the Confucius Institute at Lancaster University. Under the agreement, Hanban will allocate 80% of the grant immediately and provide the remaining 20% after progress on the project has been made. Lancaster University, which has exclusive rights to the building for 50 years, is responsible for covering all maintenance costs. The project is mandated to be completed within 16 months after the signing of the agreement. The original Confucius Institute project was also funded by Hanban, tracked under Record ID#44308. The project was completed on September 12th, 2018. An opening ceremony was held at the Round House. The project expanded the institute to both floors of the Round House, providing the institute with additional teaching and office spaces.

Staff comments

Hanban often provides renovations to Confucius Institutes through a special designation of Confucius Institutes as a "Model Confucius Institute". It is uncertain if this project is an example of a "Model Confucius Institute", as no source explicitly lists it as one.
