Project narrative

According to a press release by the Tongan government, on May 19th, 2020 the Chinese government donated medical supplies to the Ministry of Health to aid their fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The list of supplies donated included 100 infrared thermometers, 500 diagnostic kits, 2,700 medical disposable protective garments, 1,000 surgical shoe covers, 2,000 disposable rubber surgical gloves, 1,000 medical disposable face shields, 1,500 protective goggles, 74,700 face masks and 260 units of hand sanitizer gel. The handover ceremony took place at the Vaiola hospital in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga. In attendance were Chinese ambassador to Tonga, Cao Xiaolin, and Tongan Minister for Health Dr. Amelia Afuha’amango Tu’ipulotu. The donation of the medical supplies was accompanied by a concurrent donation of US$250,000 from the China – Pacific Island Countries Joint COVID-19 Response Fund (see Record ID#93605).
